B) EUROPEAN CAPITALS OF CULTURE
This began in 1985 and it was planned as a way of helping people in Europe feel closer to each other and to become more interested in each other's cultures. Many cities compete each year to win this honor. A winning city usually sees a renaissance (rebirth) of artistic life, a lot of building and a new investment and tourism becomes more popular.
European capitals of culture after 2011:
- 2012 Guimaraes (Portugal) and maribor (Hungary)
- 2013 Marseille (France) and Kosice (Slovakia)
- 2014 Umea (Sweden) and Riga (Latvia)
2015 Mons (Belgium) and Plzen (Czech republic)
2016 Donostia-San Sebastián (Spain) and Wroclaw (Poland)
Which towns in Spain would make a good capital of culture? Remember that the issue is culture (music, literature, art, theater, etc. and not shopping, sport, etc.).
