5B Cold Calling

How do you deal with unwanted advertisements, telephone calls and door-to-door salespeople?

Cultural notes:

Credit cards: when you use one, you are actually borrowing money from the card company. You can spend up to a credit limit (the maximum amount you can borrow) set by them. If you don't repay the money immediatly, then you will have to pay interest on the amount you owe. This is how the lenders make their profit. The amount of interest depends on the interest rate, ie a percentage established by the Bank of England.
To encourage you to use their card, banks and other card providers offer incentives such as low interest rates, often only for an introductory period, eg six months, or reward points, so that every time you spend money, you collect some points which you can use in the future to get discounts or presents.
A platinum card or a gold card is offered to wealthier users and usually has a higher credit limit.

NEGATIVE PREFIXES

Language note:
Following are some tips to help you determine whether to use in, im or il:

  • If an adjective begins with p, we use im rather than in, eg impolite.
  • If an adjective begins with r, we use ir rather than in, eg irresponsible.
  • If an adjective begins with l, we use il rather than in, eg illegible.
Please remember that un sometimes has a meaning of reversing an action, eg unwind, untie, undo, unwrap.

Product market survey activity

Think of some well-known cheap, popular products (chocolate bars, fizzy drinks, potato crisps, mineral water, etc.) and prepare a survey with five questions comparing two similar products.
